Our Philosophy, Our Commitment

Balfour Moss LLP has always believed in quality work and client satisfaction. Our growth has been measured and deliberate, built upon quality from within and new alliances with talented lawyers. At Balfour Moss LLP we take pride in our "team" approach to handling and resolving legal matters. Lawyers from several departments, together with a professional support staff, share their talents to develop a coordinated and cost-effective client plan. Our extensive trial and commercial experience ensures that all our clients receive timely and practical advice.

Our commitment to quality service is offered to each and every client - from individuals to large corporations, from those located in rural Saskatchewan to those whose interests are national or international in scope.

We are active and committed members of the communities in which we live and work. Many of our lawyers contribute their efforts and expertise in leadership positions in charitable and non-profit organizations. Many people within the firms also contribute countless hours of volunteer work, such as coaching sports teams, fundraising for charities, providing pro bono legal assistance, and public legal education.

Our History, Our Growth

The history and growth of Balfour Moss LLP is a reflection of the people associated with the firm. Their professional abilities and personal qualities have been recognized, not only in the area of law, but by the larger community as a whole.

Throughout our history, members of the firm have achieved eminent distinctions. Four former members are currently Justices of the Court of Queen's Bench for Saskatchewan. Two others are Justices of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. One former member was a Senator and, previous to that served as a Member of Parliament. Two have held seats in Saskatchewan's Legislative Assembly, and one has served as Mayor of Regina. We are proud of this recognition and of the people who have made it possible.

James Balfour, K.C. founded the firm in 1895. His aim was to serve the needs of Regina, a growing agricultural community. As the city grew and prospered, the firm expanded and diversified, meeting the demand for new and changing legal services. Today, over one hundred years later, we continue to meet those needs, with full service offices in Regina and Saskatoon.

Three generations of the Balfour family have practiced with the firm. James Balfour, K.C., the firm's founder, was a hard working corporate and commercial lawyer. He acted as legal counsel to many businesses, including one of Canada's oldest and largest chartered banks. He also took an active role in the community and served Regina, first as a Public School Trustee, and later as Mayor.

Reginald M. Balfour, Q.C. joined his father's law firm in the late 1920's. He was highly regarded for his skill as an advocate. In 1965, he was appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench for Saskatchewan. Reginald's son, R. James Balfour, Q.C., joined the firm in 1952, specializing in corporate law. He served as a Member of Parliament for Regina and, in 1979, was appointed to the Canadian Senate.

John Moss, Q.C., one of Saskatchewan's foremost litigation lawyers, joined the law firm in 1965. He has appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada on many occasions, earning respect from clients, colleagues and the judiciary for his integrity and advocacy. John remains associated with the firm as counsel.

Robert Milliken, Q.C., a long time practitioner in Regina, joined the firm in 1975, bringing as a client the largest agricultural corporation in Saskatchewan-a corporation his father was instrumental in founding. In his years of practice, Bob was recognized as a dedicated and talented lawyer with extensive experience in agricultural law, corporate law and estate law.
